薗部一騎 KAZUKI SONOBE『FUKUSHIMA/MIRRORS』

薗部一騎は1993年に福島県で生まれ、独学で写真を学びました。主に鏡を用い、自己と他者の認識や関係性を問いかける写真作品を手がけています。「TOKYO FRONTLINE PHOTO AWARD 2022」では名和晃平賞を受賞。そして2023年に清里フォトアートミュージアムに作品が収蔵された、注目すべきアーティストの1人です。
本作で薗部は、生まれ育った福島の地を舞台に、鏡を積んだ軽トラックで各地を巡り、その風景を撮影しています。街や自然の中に設置された鏡は、自己と他者、存在と不在の境界を問いかけます。
自身が「見るためでも撮るためでもない」と語るこの撮影は、目的を持たない儀式的な行為として繰り返される独特な写真行為であり、薗部自身の実感を映し出しています。福島という場所性を超えて、個人としての内面と対峙した本作は、鑑賞者を新たな認識と問いの中へと導くでしょう。

Kazuki Sonobe was born in 1993 in Fukushima Prefecture and is a self-taught photographer. Using mirrors as a central element, his photographic works question the perception and relationships between self and others. He received the Kohei Nawa Award at the TOKYO FRONTLINE PHOTO AWARD 2022, and in 2023, his work was acquired by the Kiyosato Photo Art Museum—marking him as one of the most noteworthy emerging artists today.
In this work, Sonobe travels across his hometown of Fukushima in a light truck carrying a mirror, capturing the surrounding landscapes. Mirrors placed in town and natural settings raise questions about the boundaries between self and other, presence and absence.
Describing his process as “neither looking in order to photograph nor photographing in order to look,” Sonobe’s approach becomes a ritualistic act without a clear purpose—an act that nevertheless reflects a deep sense of reality for him. Transcending the specificity of Fukushima, this project confronts the artist’s inner self as an individual, inviting viewers into a new realm of perception and inquiry.
