 — Momoco Nakagawa started taking photographs in 2019, after a turning point in her experience when she broke her leg. While shooting the exterior walls of buildings as her motif, one day she became interested in slime mold and began to grow it herself in a petri dish. While living with slime mold, her interest extended to humans as living organisms. She felt that human skin and the exterior walls she had been photographing were similar in that they both had a "boundary surface between the inside and outside" and "the inability to see what is going on inside," and started to create collages, which led to her current works. Her works create strange sense of distance, which lead to sensation that gradually blurs the distance and intimacy between the self and the other. Nakagawa has received the "TOKYO FRONTLINE PHOTO AWARD 2023" semi-grand prize and was selected for the "DOUBLE ANNUAL 2023" held at the National Art Center, Tokyo, and is attracting increasing attention. MOMOCO NAKAGAWA Born in 1992 in Kyoto, Japan. In 2023, she received the runner-up prize at the TOKYO FRONTLINE PHOTO AWARD. She likens the everyday act of living with slime mold and photographing on a daily basis to “palpation of the world” in her work. She develops two-dimensional works and installations using photographs, treating as motifs things that have been considered “boundaries,” such as human skin and the walls of buildings in cities.
