To coincide with the show, we will publish a special issue, “HYPER!! magazine 2025 junaida,” devoted to this exhibition. The exhibition brings together approximately 90 original paintings created between 2023 and 2025, carefully selected from his recent body of work, including some being presented to the public for the first time. The show features a gathering of collaborative works from recent years, including a painting created for Fukuyama Masaharu’s song "Kusunoki-Blowing in the wind of 500 years-"; selected original drawings from "Himitsu Stranger," a picture-and-song book with Masamune Kusano (Spitz); and selected original drawings from “KOKO WA OUCHI," created with Shuntaro Tanikawa. Also on view are paintings featured in his latest publications, including the picture book "ATLAS" and the poetry-and-painting book "Tomoshibi." The exhibition features Kenji Yanobe’s ongoing Ship's Cat series, inspired by the legendary seafaring cats that accompanied voyagers from the ancient Orient to the Age of Discovery. In this chapter, a Ship's Cat arrives on ancient Earth aboard the spaceship Luca — shaped like the Tower of the Sun — and manifests as a floating "cat island" on the lake. As a mythic bearer of culture and life itself, the Ship's Cat comes to life in the natural setting of Lake Miyazawa. This exhibition builds on Yanobe’s 2024 presentation "BIG CAT BANG" at Ginza Six. While that earlier work visualized the origin of life, "SHIP'S CAT ISLAND" presents a side story — an alternative art history told through the perspective of the Ship's Cat. Where did the Ship's Cats come from? What did it bring to humankind? The magazine includes rich photo documentation and behind-the-scenes images taken by acclaimed artist-photographers Takashi Kawashima and Kenta Cobayashi, each offering a distinct visual interpretation of the exhibition. It also features a long-form interview with Yanobe, delving into the conceptual background of the project and the development of related programs such as "Kenji Yanobe: Find the Ship’s Cats!" part of the HYPER Kids Program. Also highlighted is the first installment of the "Metsa Art Project," which took place during the same period. The featured work — " Play with the Kotodama of Plants, Trees, Insects and Fish" — is an AR installation by internationally recognized artist Keita Kojima, presented throughout the forest of Metsa. The exhibition was curated by Shigeo Goto, director of G/P+abp and founding director of HYPER MUSEUM HANNO.
