Kobayashi has developed a body of work that quietly captures the climate of a place, the accumulation of time, and the subtle traces of human presence. This book brings together the series of the same title, developed during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The project began with the artist’s encounter with a snow-covered mountain village in the year following his grandmother’s death. From then on, whenever snow was forecast, he drove into the mountains and continued photographing the landscape. These scenes are intertwined with memories of his childhood and with his thoughts of his grandmother. The snowy landscapes in this book may appear ordinary, like scenes that could be found in any rural mountain region of Japan. Yet within their quiet stillness reside the distinct climate of the land, the traces of daily life, and the artist’s own layered emotions. Edited by Shigeo Goto, the book is structured not to fold the images into a narrative, but to direct attention toward each photograph as an image in itself. However, no place is truly an isolated island, and the only certainty is that landscapes endure far beyond the span of human lives. Even as humans depart like fleeting foam, landscapes continue their cyclical existence. Even if they are ravaged and transformed into shopping centers, they might, centuries later, revert to meadows. Landscapes never die off. Masahide Kobayashi's photographs transcend mere narratives. They don't so much portray the current reality as they project an image directed toward epochs in the distance. Such is their essence. While I am undoubtedly presently beholding Masahide Kobayashi's photographs, simultaneously, I find myself perceiving them as an existence belonging to centuries ahead. Given that the world is in constant flux, the landscapes captured in Masahide Kobayashi's photographs no longer exist. Only the photographs endure. The entity of Masahide Kobayashi's photographs remains. Now, is it humanity or photographs that continue to drift? — Masahide Kobayashi Born in 1980 in Mimasaka City, Okayama.
