岡山県美作市出身の写真家・小林正秀によるアートブック『YAMAYUKI』。
小林はこれまで、土地の風土や時間の堆積、人の気配を静かにすくい取るような作品を発表してきた。本書は、2020年のコロナ禍にまとめられたシリーズ「山雪」の作品をもとに構成されている。

小林は、祖母の死の翌年、山間の集落で出会った雪景色をきっかけに、その風景を撮り続けた。そこには幼少期の記憶や祖母への思いが重なり、雪を見つめる時間は、個人的な記憶をたどる時間でもあった。

本書に収められた景色は、日本の山間部であればどこにでもありそうな、特別ではない風景かもしれない。けれどその静かなイメージのなかには、この土地ならではの風土や暮らし、そして作家自身の感情が静かに宿っている。本書は写真を物語へと回収するのではなく、一枚一枚の像そのものへ向かわせる構成となっている。

Masahide Kobayashi, a photographer from Mimasaka City, Okayama, presents his photobook YAMAYUKI. Kobayashi has developed a body of work that quietly captures the climate of a place, the accumulation of time, and the subtle traces of human presence.

This book brings together the series of the same title, developed during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. The project began with the artist’s encounter with a snow-covered mountain village in the year following his grandmother’s death. From then on, whenever snow was forecast, he drove into the mountains and continued photographing the landscape. These scenes are intertwined with memories of his childhood and with his thoughts of his grandmother.

The snowy landscapes in this book may appear ordinary, like scenes that could be found in any rural mountain region of Japan. Yet within their quiet stillness reside the distinct climate of the land, the traces of daily life, and the artist’s own layered emotions. Edited by Shigeo Goto, the book is structured not to fold the images into a narrative, but to direct attention toward each photograph as an image in itself.

Works from this series are currently on view at Roka, a ryokan on Naoshima island. For non-staying guests, the works can be viewed through the art tour (14:15–14:45, reservation required at least 7 days in advance; in Japanese).
